3 Things to Try
Floor Time
/flôr tīm/
noun
the 15-60 minute time period spent laying on the floor in the middle of the work day, typically as a relief from the soul-sucking reality of corporate America.
*big sigh* This week has been saurrr packed. I spent last weekend in the Poconos Mountains, juicing the very last bits of summer with a lazy float down the Delaware River. The weekdays have been packed with video shoots for work, fall and winter project prep, ample (and I do mean ample) time spent training Klaus, and organizing all things to host a dinner for 8 tonight. Life really be lifin’!
When things get busy like this, I get simultaneously more productive (because we love working down to the wire) and also more befuddled by what requires my attention. It’s easy to forget my mindfulness practices during times like these—yet these are the moments when I probably need them most.
In college and the few years after, I had such a killer journaling practice. I truly wrote in it almost every day. It was a good grounding practice for me to recognize where I was, and be able to look back at previous entries to see where I came from. Lately, my mind has been on overload (usually foreshadowing that some big change is around the corner…) and I just need a way to focus.
So earlier this week, the Emma Watson “What’s in my bag?” Vogue video aired on YouTube. For those who don’t already know, she is literally my childhood hero. I won’t deny having literal scrapbooks of her in third grade, she is the only person I have ever written fanmail to (yes, I did receive a SIGNED headshot in return, and I have it to this day), and in 2017 I met her at a book party for work—it is the corest of core memories and in the aftermath, probably the closest thing I’ve ever experienced to having a stroke. But like, in a fun, exciting way. Anyway.
She takes a journal everywhere she goes, and every day writes 3 things that were joyful, 3 things that were kind—either she did for someone or vice versa, and 3 things that she did well. I started doing this exercise this week and have found that the intentional reflection of the previous day, and the structure around it, have been things I can get behind. It’s pushed me to look at the good even on days when mentally / emotionally I’ve felt bad. And though I think it’s too soon to feel the benefits of the practice, it’s a nice reminder that sometimes taking a moment for yourself really does bring more inner and outer peace. Maybe you’ll also give it a try??

By the way…I’m reading this.
Guys. GUYS. I FINALLY finished Throne of Glass #3, Heir of Fire!! It only took me the better part of the year (obviously I read other stuff along the way) but I made it through and whoa did it take a turn—like this book had a beheading. A BEHEADING?! It’s giving GoT (#winteriscoming #nothingbutrespectforMYqueenofthenorth #thepacksurvives) and I’m scared but I am going to power through to book four once Libby lets me.
