Floor Time
/flôr tīm/
noun
the 15-60 minute time period spent laying on the floor in the middle of the work day, typically as a relief from the soul-sucking reality of corporate America.
Oh em gee HIIIIII. I feel like I haven’t talked to you in forever—largely because I decided to become the incubus of viral plague for the majority of February. It was ass. But now it’s March baybee! My best friend turns 31 tomorrow, I’m finally healthy and no longer on [insert long list of meds here] and we’re going to get *British accent activated* absolutely plastered this weekend. May you all channel the same chaotic energy.
But before we enjoy the false spring Sunday, I wanted to share with you what I did while on radio silence from Floor Time last week! I returned to one of my favorite cities in the world, Ciudad de México, for a few days before heading to Cancún for a wedding. I have to say that traveling to warm places in February is 1000% the move—the day I flew out, New York got a surprise snow day and after two weeks of illness, I was beyond ready to GTFO to be healed by some sun and salt water.
Mexico City to me is just such a vibrant and liveable city. If you remember from my Floor Time recap from 2022 when I was there last, I had said, “I could move here.” And I stand by that. The one teeeeeensy tiiiiiiiiny caveat is that I have never not gotten sick there (and learned through talking with more friends and people at the wedding that it is indeed a universal experience). It’s a small price to pay for how wonderful the city is—and if you’re reading this and thinking, Clarice that sounds actually ridiculous, buy yourself a ticket to CDMX and let me know if I’m wrong.
The nice thing about going back to the same city is that you feel less rushed to see all the sights and can just, exist a little more in the space. I revisited some of my favorite spots—namely, La Clandestina, Taquería Orinoco, Handshake Speakeasy, and saw a new Luis Barragán design (last time I went to Casa Estudio, and this time I visited Casa Giraldi, a private residence shown to us by the son of the client—he grew up in the house).
But then there were new things I perhaps wanted to do last trip but didn’t get to. For instance, we ventured over to Xochimilco and rented a trajinera for the day. We floated in the canals, bought some songs from the mariachi band, got the world’s largest micheladas, and enjoyed the sun. We also stumbled on the coziest, most quintessential Mexico City bar, Bar Félix, where we enjoyed probably the best mezcal margarita I’ve ever had???
All this to say, I love Mexico City, and being able to practice my Spanish was actually so wonderful (got a compliment from a barista, NBD). This was my first international trip of 2024 and all I can stress is that there is truly nothing that makes you richer than traveling. I hope you all get the opportunity to visit new and wonderful places this year. And if Mexico City is what you’re curious about, I’m sharing my extremely detailed color-coordinated and icon-coordinated Google Map with all the recs exclusively with you Floor Time readers. And just for transparency, I’m thinking for the future of Floor Time I might make things like this a paid subscriber option—is that something you’d be interested in / pay for to get a bonus recommendation newsletter once a month? Please give me your feedback in the comments!!
Something I Thought of in the Shower
How are they going to wrap up the series finale of Good Trouble when there are literally so many open storylines to tie up?
Something Pretty
This is what the courtyard of Casa Giraldi looks like. This is someone’s CHILDHOOD HOME. How insane is that.
Something To Laugh About
Here are this week’s gems:
Here’s this amazing and very topical crossover.
This is just some good ole fashioned Greek mythology humor for my fellow NERDS.
When I saw this video, I just thought to myself, how does one explain internet culture to anyone who isn’t on the internet. Like I understood every word of this and it shouldn’t make sense but it’s SO CLEAR.
Can’t wait to finish this masterpiece this weekend.
And here’s some live footage of me in Mexico—this is real! Not captured is Andrew narrating, “oh. OH…you’re…swimming??”
Something for Clarice
Hey! This newsletter is free and I intend to keep it that way. That said, if you love it and want to show your appreciation, buy me a coffee :)
By the way…I’m reading this.
I’m back on Throne of Glass, ya’ll! Book 5: Empire of Storms, hopefully soon to be Tower of Dawn.
Have a lovely weekend! May you delight in watching Dune 2 while sticking your hand in an sex toy official AMC popcorn bucket. Maybe you, like me, will question the casting choice of Christopher Walken (there’s a time and place for a thicc New York accent, and frankly I don’t think it’s Arrakis in year 10191).
And one last thing: watch this space for next week’s Floor Time because I will have the full Oscar best picture round-up which I am VERY excited to share!
Til’ next time, cinephiles. Your friend,
Clarice
