Floor Time
/flôr tīm/
noun
the 15-60 minute time period spent laying on the floor in the middle of the work day, typically as a relief from the soul-sucking reality of corporate America.
I have now lived in New York long enough to experience the cycle of friends coming and going. One of those friends happens to be moving after this weekend, back to the homeland1. And this is interesting because she has actually been here the same amount of time as I have (give or take a couple of months). Personally, I’ve never felt more at home in New York and at the moment leaving the city hasn’t even crossed my mind. That said, there are things that do get under my skin (what can only come out of living here long enough, which is cool?).
At my friend's goodbye dinner, we asked her what things she’ll miss most about New York, and what she won’t. And just like giving feedback in the workplace, we asked her to give us two good things for every bad one (e.g. you suck beans at your job, Joe! but you wear nice shirts and are up-to-date on what’s happening in the Twitterverse—or *insert better example here*).
It got me thinking about my two good things. So in what will most definitely read as a journal entry, here’s this:
Dear Diary,
I have a crush on a boy! Anyway, Newww York Cityyy!
I hate that I can’t get a good burrito here, but I love that the pizza is fire and the ramen slaaaps.
I don’t love that I have to take a train to get to any hike where you can’t hear highway traffic, and when you get there it’s…fine. But I do love that it is the most walkable city and the subway can take you anywhere.
I could do without spending $50 every time I step outside my house to like, breathe, but I do love that you get what you pay for in terms of the quality of food and drinks, and the breadth of possibility in the experiences you may have.
I HATE when people walk slowly but I love that no one looks at me all weird when I dart through them. Also, I love that there are other people in the city who do walk as fast as me.
I don’t love that all the New York hullabaloo and bustling city-ness of it all can get to me sometimes, but it’s pretty awesome how easy and quick it is to fly anywhere else in the world (foreshadowing!). Also that flights are generally quite cheap because everything flies through here.
I don’t love having a public meltdown, but I do love that nobody minds their business like New Yorkers—aka no one has ever made eye contact with me while I’m having a subway sob™ and if they did, I’d bet it would be to say something encouraging like, “get it together,” “it’s not that deep,” or “you’re an ugly crier.”
I’m cackling because I feel like that list got more and more unhinged the longer it went on. All this to say, we love New York! But I would also name my firstborn after whoever could manage to fly an El Castillito al pastor burrito to me.
Something Pretty
This past week I stayed at the famous Fontainebleau Miami! It was very cool to stay in such a famous spot (and I did sing “Gold…FINGAHHH” every time I stepped out to the pool deck), but I will say there are other cheaper options that I would recommend over this if you’re ever thinking of a visit :)
Something To Laugh About
Here are this week’s gems:
To laugh
I too am the second girl. Also in this comment section, someone said the second girl is just the first girl in sport mode, and that tracks. I guess I’m just chronically in sport mode???
Should we all go to silent disco? I want to be this.
Oop called out. Why does my fyp keep coming for me like this!!
To smile
Have a lovely day, friends! Hope you find two good things for every sucky thing and may your Friday feedback meetings be fruitful.
Til’ next time, frogs. Your friend,
Clarice
By the way…I’m reading this.
You guessed it. Still this. Honestly, I’m having a blast. I blew through one of the books while at Miami Beach this past weekend (interesting choice, I am aware), and am just racing to the end to see how the hell this story ends. Meanwhile, I am also thinking about re-reading Red, White, & Royal Blue in light of this week’s film poster release, and subsequent premiere coming in August (Heartstopper AND RWARB in one month!? We are truly blessed!!!).
It’s California.
